THE MAGIC OF A WALKING STICK

At VILLEROUGE-TERMENES

Itineray type : Foot

Access Sentier Cathare

Description :

In the footsteps of Bélibaste, this little jaunt (“Petite vadrouille”) will inform you of the different ways a simple piece of wood can be used while hiking around a village which is one of the hub sites of the Cathar region (“site pole du pays Cathare”).

Descriptif détaillé :

From the stone stele onward, go down towards the place de la Mairie (Town hall square). Once you’ve crossed the Pont Neuf, walk up the right bank of the Lou stream through the rue Blanche. Before heading towards the rue du Moulin, make a short detour through the Porte Saint-Jean (1): walk past two windmills and around a third to reach the red soil (presence of iron oxides and Montpellier Aphyllanthes) (2).
The path next meets up with the GR 36 in the direction of Lagrasse. When crossing a narrow col, turn right immediately after the roc de l’Aigle (3). If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of an eagle on its promontory.
The path continues uphill, crossing the Gaït and the serre de Labadié, offering you a panoramic view on the Corbières (altitude: 500 m) (4).
The path, lined with box trees, heath and rock rose, goes down towards the refuge chapel of Saint-Martin (5).
Covered with road metal where it crosses a brook, it meets up with the track suitable for motor vehicles and is marked by a cairn (6). Before you reach the Recompatot sheep farm, turn left in a coomb leading to the Gourneil stream.
(7) Walk round the Pech Touliza, ford the stream and walk uphill to the stand of holm oak trees then go downhill again to the banks of the stream.
Built on its islet, at the confluence of the Gourneil and Notre-Dame streams, is the Notre-Dame-des-Champs-Bons chapel (8).
(9) Return to the village: walk past the chapel, the GR 36 variant on your right hand side goes around the Pech Rigaud amidst box trees, pistachios and Aleppo pines. The track, lined by several gardens protected by ancient dry-stone walls, goes along the Condamine with its playground.
(10) Cross the Pont Vieux, return to the place du Village and end your hike in front of the portal of the Saint-Etienne parish church.

Excellent hike!! Unfortunately it is poorly marked and we got lost several times. I highly recommend bringing a copy of the trail map with you so you don't miss the turns. I recommend hiking it clockwise so the best view will be in front of you as you come down from St. Martin chapel. The view is spectacular!!! Unfortunately the trail to St. Martin chapel is not marked when coming from the clockwise direction so look out for it not long after you join the dirt road.
