THE LOCAL GARDNER

At MOUTHOUMET

Itineray type : Foot

Description :

This little jaunt (“Petite vadrouille”) will tell you more about the way the different resources of this region have been put to use and illustrates the diversity of trades and services in a village of the Hautes Corbières in the 19th century.

Descriptif détaillé :

South of the village, below the D613, the path runs alongside some vegetable plots, decorative gardens and small orchards (1). After the old transformer, you’ll enter the forest with its white oaks, holm oaks and box trees. At the edge of the woods, on a hillock, one of the rare capitelles of the Mouthoumet canton is situated (2). A short detour takes us to a track suitable for motor vehicles. The plot division is characterized by long and narrow strips of land: the Bruges (3). Through the rue des Ecoles and the rue du Moulin, we’ll meet up with the road to Salza. A one kilometre walk! A small stone bridge overlooks the twisting Laval stream, tributary of the Orbieu (4). Not far from there, the path crosses the pastures lined with vestiges, to the north-east of the village. IGN milestone 687 (5). A wonderful view on the surrounding peaks: the Milobres of Bouisse and of Massac, the Mont Tauch, the Nitable Roc and last but not least, the bluish Pech de Bugarach, the giant of the Corbières (1231 m) (6). At the heart of this massif, the village of Mouthoumet is situated in the middle of a huge developed plateau (7). The path, partially shaded by the oak trees, adorned by blooming cists in the springtime, meets up with the Bagaza path again. A loop going by an ancient fortified estate (8) goes down towards the Caulière stream and its riparian forest (9). Return to the village on a tarred path lined with gauged stone and dry-stone walls (10). The agricultural plot with its huge pear tree (11) meets up with the ancient path leading to Laroque-de-Fa (the current D613) and the Sainte-Anne chapel (12). In the village, the rue de la Gare, with its lined houses, ends in the series of doors belonging to the Fortress and the church (13).
