Itineray type : Foot

Description :

This ‘Petite Vadrouille’ (‘Little Jaunt’) invites you to discover the use of stone by our ancestors through the ages.
In springtime, your hike will be highly colourful thanks to the floral diversity.

Descriptif détaillé :

Cairn (1) Owing to the activity of iron ore mining, the art of forging was a constant for a great many years in Félines-Termenès.
Cairn (2) The first time the church is mentioned dates back to the 13th century. The fleur-de-lis on the choir’s tiles undoubtedly are nothing more than the mark of a particular workshop.
Cairn (3) Remains of stony edges allow us to discern the erstwhile presence of mule tracks.
The old station at the edge of the village is a sign there once was a strongly developed railway network in the region in the first half of the 20th century: the Compagnie des tramways de l’Aude.
Cairn (4) From the Neolithic onward, shepherds have cleared the antique Mediterranean woods to create pastures for their grazing herds.
Cairn (5) An ancient sheepfold recalls the village’s pastoral economy.
Cairn (6) The different types of soil allow us to discover a huge variety of plants: broom on a chalky soil, heather and lavender on an acidic soil.
Cairn (7) The Porteille dolmen reminds us of the prehistoric rites that once took place here.
Cairn (8) On the slope of a cliff, the Matthias cave once was used as a shelter and even, in certain times, as a temporary dwelling place.
Cairn (9) The abundantly present limestone was exploited and transformed into quicklime. Some limestone-built houses can still be found.
Cairn (10) In the fertile valley where the Libre stream runs, polyculture, wine-farming and stock breeding were all practised simultaneously.
The presence of a mill shows that cereal culture once was prosperous.
Cairn (11) The gorges of the Libre have been sculpted in a limestone landscape.
