Overlooking the Termenet gorges and the picturesque village, the Château de Termes is known for the long siege of 1210 during the Albigensian Crusade. The original fortified village—a castrum—was the capital of a lordship won over by the Cathar heresy. It then offered a fierce resistance of nearly four months to Simon de Montfort.
Termes was later redeveloped as a royal fortress, a strategic site protecting the Kingdom of France. It is around this architecture that the proposal for UNESCO World Heritage status is based.
Historical exhibition and short film at the village reception area, the starting point of the tour. Free parking. Accessible in 15 minutes on foot with printed or digital materials.
The monument regularly undergoes renovations, making it an ever more impressive site. The omnipresent nature invites contemplation. Breathe, you're in Termes!
Additional Information :
In March and November open on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. December, January, February, closed (except groups by reservation).
