Located on a rocky hillock and dominating the prestigious Haut Fitou vineyard, a former possession of the Termes family, Aguilar became in the XNUMXth century one of the five sons of Carcassonne. The royal fortress then defended the border between the kingdoms of France and Aragon. Today, the old fortress watches over the peaceful expanses of vineyards of Tuchan and Paziols.
In 1210, it was occupied by Simon de Montfort before falling into the hands of Saint Louis (Louis IX), King of France. It was consolidated and modified by the royal engineers at the end of the XNUMXth century. Its upper enclosure shows quite original architectural features in the region.
