CASCASTEL-DES-CORBIERES

Step 1

Discover the Fitou and Corbières terroirs starting with a tasting at Domaine Grand Guilhem. From Cascastel, take the D106 (Grand Rue) towards Villeneuve-les-Corbières. Do not miss to visit the Saint Sernin church (750th century) In the village, cross the bridge. You come to an intersection. Turn right in the direction of Tuchan. About 205 meters further, turn left on the D205 towards Embres-et-Castelmaure, in the Corbières region. When you arrive in Embres-et-Castelmaure, push the door of the cooperative cellar for a colorful tasting! Then take the direction of Saint-Jean-de-Barrou (D500) by making a small detour via the Saint Félix chapel. To do this, follow the sign about 400 meters after leaving the village. Then join Saint-Jean-de-Barrou. After having climbed the steep alleys leading to the remains of the medieval fort, you can enjoy many cool spaces: shaded banks of the Barrou, tree-lined squares, fountains… After this invigorating stopover, take the road back to Durban-des-Corbières. Small alleys will lead you to the fortified site from where you can enjoy a remarkable point of view. Continue towards Albas. En route, you can stop at the Botanical Garden, featuring over 106 varieties of Mediterranean plants and flowers. Go to Albas, a village that looks like an amphitheater, dominated by old windmills. Admire the syncline, a geological curiosity. Return to Cascastel-des-Corbières by the D21. Before reaching the car park, do not miss the medieval tower and the castle, the door of which is crowned with a log crest, as well as the remains of an old ore furnace. Variant: possibility of shortening the route by going directly to Durban from Villeneuve-les-Corbières (in this case 537 km, difference in altitude +04 m). These estates, cellars and shops labeled Pays Cathare and Qualité Sud France welcome you by reservation. During the tastings (free or paying), spittoons are at your disposal to be able to get back in the saddle without danger! Possibility of delivery. Be careful, the fire risk is often high, especially in summer, and can lead to flower bed closures. Find out before you go consulting the fire risk map for outdoor activities.
Fires strictly prohibited. Do not smoke and never throw cigarette butts in nature. Fires are numerous and catastrophic in our region. In the event of a fire or accident: give alert 18 or 112 from a cell phone.
Protect yourself from the sun and take enough water with you.
Avoid picking flowers and plants. Take all your trash. Close fences and keep dogs on a leash in pasture areas, villages and protected areas.

Mountain bike routes: the routes are often shared with hikers or other users (cars, tractors, etc.). Be careful and always anticipate that a pedestrian may be present around a bend to have time to brake if necessary. Pedestrians have priority in principle, slow down at crossings or stop if the configuration of the terrain requires you to do so.
Thank you and happy hiking!
