A landscaped path of about three kilometers allows the discovery of the site of Fourques - St Rome, located north of the plateau of Lacamp, in the departmental property of Saint Rome. The start is on the D40, between Villerouge-Termenès and Albas. Mediterranean forest with holm and pubescent oaks, scrubland, natural meadows and old vines share the 600 ha of this space. The site conceals vestiges of a centuries-old occupation, in particular two metallurgical sites dating from antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Archaeological research has also identified a fortified building from the middle of the Middle Ages (12th-13th century), which probably played a role in controlling the mines on the Lacamp plateau. The route also offers a reading of the particular geology of the site (tuff waterfall, travertines) and its flora.

Step 1

The car park is on the D40 between Albas and Villerouge-Termenès. The tour begins at the old farmhouse of Saint-Rome and takes you on the traces of mining activity in the Hautes-Corbières. The small loop, around the medieval buildings of Fourques on the top of the plateau, also allows you to admire the travertines of Fourques and to learn more about this remarkable specificity. Along the Dous stream and crossing the oak forest of Saint-Rome, a discovery trail with explanatory panels allows you to discover the wonders present.

Be careful, the fire risk is often high, especially in summer, and can lead to flower bed closures. Find out before you go consulting the fire risk map for outdoor activities.
Fires strictly prohibited. Do not smoke and never throw cigarette butts in nature. Fires are numerous and catastrophic in our region. In the event of a fire or accident: give alert 18 or 112 from a cell phone.
Protect yourself from the sun and take enough water with you.
Avoid picking flowers and plants. Take all your trash. Close fences and keep dogs on a leash in pasture areas, villages and protected areas.

Mountain bike routes: the routes are often shared with hikers or other users (cars, tractors, etc.). Be careful and always anticipate that a pedestrian may be present around a bend to have time to brake if necessary. Pedestrians have priority in principle, slow down at crossings or stop if the configuration of the terrain requires you to do so.
Thank you and happy hiking!
