Departure from the car park at the top of the village. In a grandiose site, the climb to this superb rock allows you to discover the heart of the Corbières. Here, nature goes hand in hand with history: rebellious, as was the Château de Termes in its time. On the program: Walk along a beal then in the shade of a forest, overlook the spectacular Coynepont gorges, cross a magnificent plateau very flowery in spring, offering a beautiful view of the Hautes-Corbières, return to the village and its castle passing through the undergrowth...

1

Step 1

Descend towards the village of Termes following the stream.
2

Step 2

Cross the footbridge in front of the town hall. Go left then right following the path between the gardens. Reach the canal and follow it to the left as far as the Sou river (picnic tables in the shade).
3

Step 3

At the water intake, go up to the right. After a flat area, go down towards the bank for 150m then go up again to avoid a bend in the river. Reach the bank and continue to the Nougairole stream which flows into the Sou at a ford.
4

Step 4

Go up the stream for 30m, turning your back to the river and ignoring the various branches. Climb to the left then cut a path. Continue to climb and reach a ledge (viewpoint on the entrance to the gorges of Caune Pont). Continue the steep climb to reach the ridge above the gorges (! Area that can be very windy; beware of sheer drops; wide panorama). Cross the natural bridge of Caune (cave), then go up towards the cliffs of Nitable. Walk along the foot, going up to the left through the forest and scree to the ridge, in the open.
5

Step 5

Follow the path to the right. Cross the plateau leaving several departures on the left. Pass the pass and continue in the same direction until a crossroads of paths, on the edge of a wood, at the end of the plateau.
6

Step 6

Turn right. Go down a lace to the left then one to the right. Go along the Caulière valley.
7

Step 7

In the descent in the forest, leave the GR 36B (! follow the yellow markings carefully) and follow the fence of the Serre-Lairière sheepfold to join a track.
8

Step 8

Follow it to the north (view of the rock of "Fenne Prenz", – the pregnant woman). After leaving Sarrat (445m) on your left, leave the track and turn right into the forest to reach the village at the castle reception building (camin d'al Castel). If you wish to visit the castle, you will find a film, a historical exhibition and a visit document available in the reception building located on the route that you take on the right to go down to the village.

Be careful, the fire risk is often high, especially in summer, and can lead to flower bed closures. Find out before you go consulting the fire risk map for outdoor activities.
Fires strictly prohibited. Do not smoke and never throw cigarette butts in nature. Fires are numerous and catastrophic in our region. In the event of a fire or accident: give alert 18 or 112 from a cell phone.
Protect yourself from the sun and take enough water with you.
Avoid picking flowers and plants. Take all your trash. Close fences and keep dogs on a leash in pasture areas, villages and protected areas.

Mountain bike routes: the routes are often shared with hikers or other users (cars, tractors, etc.). Be careful and always anticipate that a pedestrian may be present around a bend to have time to brake if necessary. Pedestrians have priority in principle, slow down at crossings or stop if the configuration of the terrain requires you to do so.
Thank you and happy hiking!

Awesome hike. The view above the gorges is truly breathtaking and rewards the effort of the climb. Very pleasant in the spring when the plateau is in bloom. Again, very nice view of the Hautes-Corbières. In good weather, you can see the Pyrenees well. On arrival, we pass in front of the reception of the castle which we can visit to complete the day.
