CASTELMAURE

At EMBRES-ET-CASTELMAURE

Itineray type : Foot

Season : Summer

Descriptif détaillé :

Leave the chapel to your right and walk past the picnic area on the right-hand side. The path fords a stream. Right after that, turn left on (1) the grassy path then start climbing the slope of the hill.
Pass the dry-stone wall and continue to the left, in between some pine trees. The trail then turns right (2) and climbs up to the hill’s ridge. At the top, you’ll have a beautiful panoramic view on the chapel, the surrounding rocky cirque and the “corbiérol” (related to the Corbières) summits all around.
You’ll walk downhill again and next walk round a vineyard section, on a little path which goes up at first then bends (contour line) on a hillside. Going down, you’ll pass in front of a conspicuous looking tree and then you’ll get to a trail. Turn left and, at the bottom of the trail, to the right walking along the edge of some vineyards before returning to the trail you took on the outward part of the hike.
During this hike, you can do a short roundtrip to ‘les Canelles’ (30 min). However, there is no official indication on the map nor is it marked out on the paths.
Still, here is the itinerary.
Les Canelles:
From the Saint-Félix chapel, turn back to the crossroads of the different roads.
Leave the one going to Castelmaure to your right, the one leading to Embres ahead of you and take the one on your left. After about 1 km, you’ll cross a ford and immediately after that turn left. The spring is situated at about 300 m to your right.
A picnic area invites you to take a short break after you have tasted the cool water.
