1210, TERMES THE IMPREGNABLE

At TERMES

Itineray type : Foot

Description :

Cairn (1) To the left, you’ll see the Château de Termes. In 1210, when the siege took place, the village did not exist as we know it today: the citadel, with storied faubourgs (appr. suburbs) around its keep, was a fortified village (castrum) holding a particularly strong position. Simon de Montfort established his command post at the foot of the castle and led the operations from there, but it is very likely that other, subsidiary camps had been put up in other places in order to surround the site.
Cairn (2) After crossing a pastoral site, turn left on a path twisting and turning on the ridge. The remains of several sheep barns remind us of the past presence of flocks.
One can easily imagine that it was here, on these pastures, that the Crusader army, with more animals than men in its ranks, pitched camp to protect their animals from the inhabitants of Termes.
Cairn (3) After the Serre de Coste Rase, well named because of the violent winds that often visit it, you’ll enter a forest area. This reminds us of the importance of wood supplies for the Montfort army: impressive amounts of wood were needed for the framework of siege engines. Montfort put these up outside the first ramparts.
Cairn (4) La Frau: the highest point of the hike. Below, the 400 m deep gorges are witnesses of the violent geological upheaval this region underwent during the formation of the Pyrenees mountain range in the Jurassic.
Cairn (5) Walking along on the cliff-lined path, you’ll soon notice the Termes and Durfort castles, as well as the Montagne Noire to the north and the Minervois to the east.
Cairn (6) Turn back and walk down towards the Buade mill on the GR 36 a.
This mill can still function (occasionally, on appointment only). Here, you’ll have a nice view on the castle from a north-west point.
Cairn (7) From here, you can nicely see the cruciform window in the chapel of the castle.
Cairn (8) You’ll reach a col, below the building. This is the best access road if you want to visit the castle.
The track towers over the left bank of the Sou stream and the village as it exists today
