The Fontfroide Abbey

The Fontfroide Abbey ( http://www.fontfroide.com), founded in 1093, is an exceptionally well-preserved monastic site. It is situated in the Corbières massif, near a torrent or “fresh water spring” (Latin: fons frigida / Occitan: font Freda), hence the name of the abbey.
This masterpiece of Cistercian architecture, listed as Historical Monument since 1862, has preserved its abbey church, its cloister, its 12th Century chapter house, as well as the lay buildings. During the summer months, the visitors will surely be enchanted by the beauty of the terraced gardens.
